BET AWARDS 2011 REVIEW

I'm not sure where to begin with this review because my words may go all over the place like last night's BET Awards.  I always have high hopes that BET will once again, beat out it's rival, MTV and put on a superb show, and once again, I was left disappointed.  When I heard that Kevin Hart would host this year's award show, I didn't know what to make of it, because I wasn't familiar with his comedic background.  Hart was able to really bring in some of the best laughs of the night.  His stage presence came off naturally and he didn't hold back when it came to attacking celebrities like Rick Ross, Neo, and P Diddy.  I started watching the show from the Pre-Show, which once again, was a big snooze fest with an array of mediocre teen acts like YC, Mindless Behavior, and Lil Twist.  Rocsi and Terrance from 106 & Park hosted the preshow which had interviews with some of the performers and didn't show much of the celebrity's fashion, on the red carpet.  Show opened up with a performance from the Queen of Hip Hop Soul Mary J Blige, who took us back to her platinum selling album "My Life".  I loved how she brought out singer Anita Baker, which stated in previous interviews before, how much of an influence she has had over her career.  Kevin Hart opened up with dance scene and really had the audience on the edge of their seat with his comedic jabs at many of the celebrities in attendance.  Not all the performances were great, one being Rick Ross's performances that displayed his man boobs, which many of my Twitter followers stated, should of been censored.  Crotch grabbing became a routine by many artist like Ace Hood, Lil Wayne and Rick Ross.  Nicki Minaj won best female rap artist against a lot of unknown female competitors in the game.  Wow, what a big surprise!  Former Destiny's child singer, Kelly Rowland performed "Motivation" which many said was the best performance of the night.  Comedian Steve Harvey was presented with a Humanitarian Award and Patty Labelle was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award. One of the most anticipated performances of the night, was Chris Brown.  Chris Brown performance lacked excitement, until he brought out Busta Rhymes who completely stole the spotlight from the singer with his fast chanting to "Look At Me Now".  Chris Brown became the king of BET, winning the most awards for the night.  Many of the winnings, in my opinion were not deserved and seemed fixed to show CB as this years comeback kid, over Bruno Mars, Celo, B.O.B. and many others.  The biggest slip up of the night, was the announcement of the Viewers Choice Award which was first given to Rihanna and Drake for "What's My Name", then taken back and given to Chris Brown for "Look At M Now", causing a big stir on the social media sites.  BET wanted to leave some kind of controversy and planted this ridiculous elaborate scheme, which was desperate and uncalled for.  The show ended with a performance from the Queen B herself, Beyonce, performing at a music festival overseas, where she performed 2 songs from her upcoming album and showed the world her African roots with a lot of gyrating and leg movements.  You go girl! The show lasted over 3 hours and I was left once again, wondering, why did I waste a moment of my time watching this fiasco.  With so many great R&B, Soul, and Hip Hop artist out today, I thought that BET would of picked a better roster of performers for this show.  The categories seemed to be put together by someone, who has no knowledge of quality music.  Many of last nights artist were a disgrace to many of the artist that have died for this genre of music to be respected and heard, for it to be tarnished by a mouthful of obscene language, dick grabbing, lip synching performances.  BET's viewers choice flop was the biggest disgrace to the network's history by trying to draw some sort of controversy for it to be written in the morning's newspapers.  Shame on you Black Star Power!  If I were a foreigner that had no knowledge of this genre of music and what BET once stood for, I would be left clueless.  Every year, BET loses a sense of it's identity and viewership and last night's show prove to be no different.  #EPICFAIL
